Treen & Treenware in the Kitchen

<<< Back

We show here four wooden “Star Stirrers”. They are about ten inches long and the tip is a little over a inch across.

I believe they were used by putting them into the batter or whatever else needed mixing and rolling the handle between your hands. Somehow I doubt anyone was able to make whipped cream this way. It would also seem to work best with runny batter; it would be hard to work up any speed in a thick batter.

Obviously, a wire whip would be more effective and at first I wondered why anyone would bother with these. However, consider that way back when metal was hard to come by. Trees were typically abundant so tools like these could be quickly and easily made from local hardwoods at the cost of some time.

Metal would have to be brought in by wagon so it would be expensive and hard to come by.
